Step-by-Step Puja Vidhi & Katha Summary

The ritual is divided into two main parts: the Puja and the Katha (Story).

Part 1: The Rituals

  1. Sankalp: Firstly, take a vow to perform the puja with devotion for family well-being.
  2. Ganesh Puja: Next, invoke Lord Ganesha to remove obstacles.
  3. Kalash & Navagraha Puja: Following that, worship the water pot and the 9 planetary deities.
  4. Satyanarayan Abhishekam: Finally, bathe the idol (if available) with Panchamrit.

Part 2: The Satyanarayan Katha (5 Chapters)

The Katha is the soul of this puja. It consists of 5 chapters from the Reva Khanda of the Skanda Purana:

  • Chapter 1: Introduces the Vrat, narrating how Lord Vishnu told Narada Muni that this puja removes all sorrows in Kali Yuga.
  • Chapter 2: Subsequently, the story describes a poor Brahmin and a Woodcutter who became wealthy and peaceful by performing this puja.
  • Chapter 3: In contrast, the tale of merchant Sadhhu shows how he delayed the puja and faced misery (loss of wealth and son-in-law) until he fulfilled his vow.
  • Chapter 4: Furthermore, the story continues with Sadhhu’s daughter, emphasizing the importance of respecting the Prasad (Kalavati’s mistake).
  • Chapter 5: Finally, we learn of King Tungadhwaj, who ignored the puja performed by cowherds and lost his kingdom, only to regain it after realizing his ego.
