• The priest shaves a small part of the kid’s hair while chanting holy hymns. And then, the barber shaves the rest of the hair. In many families, the father performs the role of the priest also.
• The shaved-off hair is not thrown but collected and offered to the god or dipped in the holy water of the Ganga.
• Then after the head is shaved, it is washed with holy water from the Ganga (Gangajal). 
• And to prevent the possibility of any sort of irritation or infection, a paste of turmeric and sandalwood is applied.
• The sandalwood provides a cooling feeling, and the turmeric is known for its antiseptic properties, which heal injuries.
